Cleaning black sink?

To explain how to clean each type of black sink first the explanation of the different materials sinks.

There are the following materials black sinks:

  • Plastic black sink
  • Ceramic black sink
  • Quartz or granite black sink
  • Powder coated black sink
  • PVD black sink

Each material requires different cleaning, and what are the do's and don'ts on maintenance of black sinks?

Plastic Black Sink (Tectonite & Fibre)

Plastic sinks from Franke Tectonite and Ausmann Fibre are thoroughly black sinks. The plastic is impact-resistant, heat-resistant and does not discolor from sunlight. But how do you clean the sink? Clean its surface with warm soapy water and a soft, damp cloth.  To remove stubborn stains, use a cleaner with a formula without granules to avoid scratching; then rinse well. Never use abrasive solvents, bleach, acidic or harsh cleaners on the product. Hard water can cause white lime marks on your sink. In this case, use a towel to dry your sink after each use. Edible kerosene oil can correct external defects of the sink caused by normal use.

  • Do not place objects hotter than 250 °C
  • Do not use sharp objects in the sink
  • Do not drop heavy or sharp objects into the sink
  • Avoid leaving products in the sink for too long
  • Avoid lime deposits due to water hardness

Should stains or dirt remain in the sink despite proper maintenance, you can do the following:

  • Deposition of hard water / lime scale : clean with hot white vinegar
  • Metal streaks (from cooking pot, spoons and forks): clean with Petroleum
  • Aggressive stains: clean with 10 bags of baking soda to 3 liters of water in the sink and leave overnight.
  • Other Stains, eg paint or ink: clean with cleaning cloth with alcohol

Note do not use citric acid or other acids!

Powder coated and PVD black sink

For black sinks coated and with PVD finish, the base is stainless steel. A coating is applied to the stainless steel sink that gives it a nice deep color. When applied properly and cleanly, the adhesion is very strong on stainless steel. Because of the strong adhesion, the sink or sink can be used very well in the kitchen. Because it is a thin layer, attention should be paid to the following:

Prevent and avoid the following materials in the sink:

  • Frying fat
  • Toothpaste
  • Dishwasher tablets
  • Paint
  • Drain unblocker
  • Rusty objects
  • Other acids and chemical materials

In the unlikely event that any of these substances have been used, rinse the sink immediately and clean it for a long time with lukewarm water.

Do not store flammable, toxic or chemical substances in the kitchen cabinet under the sink. These substances can corrode the coated sink or pvd layer. Prevent dents and scratches in the sink by not dropping heavy objects into the sink or using a trivet when placing hot objects.

How can you maintain the black coated sink?

Clean your sink after each use by thoroughly flushing and drying with a soft cloth. Clean water is sufficient for daily maintenance, with the addition of detergent (dish soap) if necessary. Do not use abrasives such as steel wool, scouring pad or a sharp brush as these products can damage the surface of the sink.

To prevent dirt build-up or cleaning agents for daily maintenance, you can find current cleaning agents HERE.

Should the stainless steel still be visible in coated sinks (not PVD) and this is not too large, it could still be repaired by means of a lacquer pen available from the manufacturer of the sink.

Granite or Quartz Black Sink

Granite and quartz sinks are made of crushed stone and glue poured into a mold. By incorporating a black stone and black pigments into the glue, you get a beautiful thoroughly black sink.
